The Rutgers Health/New Jersey Medical School General Surgery Residency Program is an accredited program offering robust training across five clinical rotations, designed for medical students aiming to become skilled surgeons. Residency Structure

The General Surgery Residency lasts five years and includes a non-pyramidal structure, accepting ten categorical residents annually, in addition to 18 preliminary PGY-1 residents and four PGY-2 residents. This large and diverse residency aims to provide ample hands-on experience in patient care, from the operating room to outpatient settings. Residents also have the chance to take optional years for research, which could lead to advanced degrees such as MPH, MBA, or PhD.

The program highlights the integration of real-world experience with formal education, including didactic sessions and simulation training to ensure competency in critical surgical skills. Residents are expected to progressively develop their surgical skills while participating in all facets of general surgery.

Clinical Rotations

Residents undergo clinical rotations across diverse institutions including University Hospital, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Jersey City Medical Center, and the East Orange Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This multi-institutional approach allows exposure to various healthcare delivery systems and an extensive clinical experience in numerous specialties such as trauma, surgical oncology, and critical care among others.1

Educational Philosophy

The educational philosophy of the program is grounded in the understanding that residency is foundational to lifelong learning. The curriculum includes a blend of experiential learning, didactic instruction through a Basic Science Lecture Series, weekly Grand Rounds, and specialized workshops focus on diverse and essential aspects of medical and surgical practice.4

Residents actively contribute to the education of third and fourth-year medical students, thereby reinforcing their own learning while developing teaching skills. The program utilizes a model based on the six core competencies recognized in surgical education to track resident progress towards their educational milestones.3

Surgical Simulation and Skills Development

The program features a surgical simulation curriculum that integrates technical skills training into the residency experience. The simulation environment allows residents to achieve proficiency in various surgical techniques without risk to patients, expediting the learning curve significantly. Competencies in laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures are emphasized, in accordance with mandatory criteria set by surgical accreditation bodies.8

Visa Sponsorship and Application Requirements

The program does not sponsor visas but accepts applicants with J-1 visas, which adds a layer of accessibility for international medical graduates. Applicants are expected to have less than five years since medical school graduation. A complete application requires an ERAS submission, three letters of recommendation, a CV, a personal statement, transcripts, and USMLE scores.9

Foreign medical graduates are welcome to apply provided they furnish the necessary documentation and demonstrate U.S. clinical experience.9
