STEP 220Fellowship Focused Visa J1, F1

The General Surgery Residency at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn is a five-year clinical program that begins on July 1 of each year. It is accredited by ACGME and offers three categorical positions for first-year residents. The program aims to develop leaders in academic surgery and prepares residents for certification by the American Board of Surgery. Residents have the opportunity to match in competitive fellowship programs upon graduation.

Residents train at three major hospitals: NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, and NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue. The program provides a wide range of clinical and operative experiences, including exposure to various surgical specialties. Residents actively participate in patient care, supervise junior residents and medical students, and gain experience in trauma, critical care, and emergency surgery.

The curriculum includes rotations in areas such as general surgery, pediatric surgery, trauma, transplantation surgery, and more. Residents progress through foundational training to assistant chief consultant roles and finally to junior and senior chief residency positions. The residency provides significant operative experience, didactic programs, and educational conferences.

For application, the deadline is October 31, and applications are processed through ERAS. International medical graduates are accepted, and J-1 visa sponsorship is available. Requirements include a medical school transcript, dean’s letter, three letters of recommendation, and USMLE Step 1 completion. There is no minimum USMLE score requirement, and Step 2 scores are required upon selection into the program.
