St. John’s Episcopal Hospital offers a comprehensive Psychiatry Residency Program designed to provide in-depth training in the field of psychiatry. This four-year categorical program is fully accredited and maintains a commitment to excellence in resident education.

Program Structure

The program accommodates four residents per year, resulting in a small, close-knit community that fosters mentorship and personalized learning. The structure is divided into the following postgraduate years:

  • PGY-1 Year: Includes eight months of Inpatient Psychiatry, three months on general medical floors, and one month in the medical Emergency Room.
  • PGY-2 Year: Comprises four months of Inpatient Psychiatry, three months of Consultation/Liaison services, three months psychiatric Emergency Room services, and two months of Neurology at SUNY Downstate.
  • PGY-3 Year: Focuses on 12 months of Outpatient Psychiatry, with 20% of the time dedicated to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • PGY-4 Year: Involves two months within the Substance Abuse Unit at Mercy Medical Center, alongside elective opportunities in Community Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Palliative Care, and Chief Residency.

Clinical training is complemented by the involvement of medical students from multiple universities who complete core rotations in psychiatry at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, promoting a teaching environment where residents are expected to play an active role.

Curriculum and Didactics

The residency includes a thorough didactic schedule, incorporating numerous teaching conferences. The program features:

  • Bi-weekly Medical Grand Rounds with guest speakers from larger medical centers.
  • Monthly Basic Science Conferences designed to bridge clinical knowledge with foundational sciences.
  • A robust emphasis on quality improvement (QI) and patient safety projects, encouraging resident participation in research initiatives.

The education provided at St. John’s is comprehensive, aimed at reinforcing clinical expertise while also cultivating interpersonal skills essential for effective psychiatric practice.

Clinical Rotations and Experience

Training at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital places significant importance on real-world clinical experiences. Residents are involved in diverse psychiatric settings, encountering a wide variety of psychiatric disorders, which enhances their diagnostic and therapeutic skills.

Additionally, the ancillary services at St. John’s include 24-hour phlebotomy, transporter services, and EKG teams, ensuring residents have comprehensive support during their training.

Research Opportunities

The program encourages residents to engage in research projects throughout their training. This involvement not only enriches the learning experience but also contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the field.

Visa Sponsorship and Competitiveness

St. John’s Psychiatry Residency Program is open to international medical graduates (IMGs), and visa sponsorship is available for those individuals. This includes support for J-1 and H-1B visa types, allowing qualified candidates from abroad to seek residency training in this program.

The program is known to be competitive but remains friendly towards both U.S. and international candidates. The focus is placed on the overall qualifications of the applicants rather than solely exam scores, creating a diverse and inclusive cohort.

Application Requirements

Prospective applicants should note any special application requirements such as a maximum of one failed STEP exam. All applicants must submit their applications through the ERAS system, ensuring a standardized evaluation process.

Residency at St. John's Episcopal Hospital not only prepares medical professionals for immediate practice but also equips them with the skills necessary for lifelong learning and adjustment in the dynamic field of psychiatry.
