Swedish Medical Center Program

The Swedish Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program, located in the Pacific Northwest, is deeply committed to the education and formation of the next generation of Ob/Gyn physicians. This includes a wide range of experts from generalist faculty and OB hospitalists/nocturnists to subspecialists in maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

Residents within this program are expected to provide care and advocate for equity across a diverse patient population, encompassing rural and remote areas to urban communities, catering to a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. The curriculum is designed to mentor and produce highly capable and independent practitioners in the full scope of sexual and reproductive health care.

Core Experience:

• Diverse Surgical Exposure: Residents will gain significant experience in minimally invasive surgery, including operative hysteroscopy, vaginal hysterectomy, and complex laparoscopic and robotic procedures.
• High-Volume Obstetrical Care: The program offers extensive obstetrical training, focusing on evidence-based care and collaborative management of high-risk pregnancies.
• Subspecialty Exposure: Training includes extensive exposure across all major OBGYN specialties, such as GYN oncology, maternal-fetal medicine (MFM), urogynecology (UroGyn), reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI), and family planning.

Educational Aims:

The program aims to prepare well-rounded, independent OBGYN practitioners by exposing them to the breadth of the specialty. It aims to develop capable surgeons, provide high-quality obstetrical care, and prepare physicians to serve as expert consultants. Additionally, the program places a strong emphasis on population health, care of the medically underserved, education on the history of racial discrimination in medicine, and the social determinants of health.

Resident Experience:

Swedish Medical Center provides unmatched OB/GYN experiences in the region, having the highest surgical volume and conducting nearly 8,000 deliveries at First Hill alone. With a strong emphasis on a collaborative educational experience, the residency program includes unique programs in MIGS, menopause/vulvovaginal specialty clinic, LGBTQIA+ care, and addiction recovery programs for pregnancy.

Tracking and Research:

This residency is one of the few to offer a "tracking" program, allowing for more personalized education and exploration of specific interests or subspecialties. Residents are also expected to engage in scholarly projects, with opportunities ranging from clinical trials to quality improvement projects.
