Kern Medical Center Program

The Kern Medical Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is one of the oldest in the United States, established to provide exceptional training dedicated to women's healthcare. Program Structure and Rotations

The residency is structured over four years, including various rotations and responsibilities that evolve with the resident’s progress. During the first year, residents focus on gaining fundamental skills in patient assessment and management, and they manage intrapartum and postpartum care. They will perform uncomplicated vaginal deliveries, primary cesarean sections, and basic gynecologic procedures, which include hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. Additionally, they gain ultrasound skills and basic outpatient care experience.

In the second year, the complexity of responsibilities increases. Residents manage both normal and complicated obstetric patients, perform a variety of deliveries and gynecologic surgeries, and delve deeper into specialized areas such as gynecologic oncology.

The third year emphasizes advanced skills, including managing high-risk pregnancies and refining surgical techniques. Residents are also encouraged to engage in research projects within the field.

By the fourth year, residents take on a supervisory role, managing patient care and teaching junior residents and medical students while performing advanced gynecological procedures.

Application Process

The application process for the residency program is competitive. There are four positions available each year, and applications are accepted through ResidencyCAS. Essential requirements include a common application, CV, personal statement, standardized letters of evaluation, medical school transcripts, and USMLE or COMLEX scores. The program expects applicants to have passed Step I and Step II on the first attempt and considers D.O. applicants equally if they provide USMLE scores alongside COMLEX scores. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must have an ECFMG certificate.
