The Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program at the University of Alabama Medical Center provides comprehensive training in various essential disciplines within ENT. The curriculum includes exposure to head and neck cancer, endocrine procedures, microvascular reconstruction, robotic surgeries, and comprehensive training in general otolaryngology, laryngology, and facial trauma management.

Residents benefit from state-of-the-art facilities distributed across several sites within the UAB Medical Center District, including the Kirklin Clinic, UAB Hospital, UAB Highlands, UAB Hoover Specialty Care, and Children's of Alabama. The program also boasts access to a five-station, fully-equipped temporal bone and sinus lab, and a wellness center featuring a lactation room, exercise equipment, and quiet zones for collaborative work.

Annually, the program selects four residents per year for a total of five years of training. During the first year (PGY1), interns experience a mixed schedule, with six months devoted to general surgery and six months to ENT. For the subsequent years (PGY2-5), residents engage with a rotating schedule across various services, providing a well-rounded exposure throughout their training years.

Research Opportunities

Residents partake in monthly research meetings, along with an annual research day where they are required to present their findings and publish at least one article in a major journal by the end of their residency. Each PGY3 resident is required to complete a dedicated three-month research rotation, guided by a clinical research director to enhance their scholarly activities.

With over 4,000 surgical procedures performed annually, residents gain extensive operative experience, completing over 3,000 surgical cases by the end of training. The program emphasizes a high surgical volume, allowing residents to refine their surgical skills significantly.

Residents receive financial assistance to attend relevant courses and conferences, along with an educational allowance of $900 during PGY2-4. Awards for research excellence are granted each year, providing additional incentives for academic engagement.
