The Psychiatry Residency Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is designed to produce knowledgeable, well-trained, and professional physicians capable of excelling in various medical practices. It is a four-year, ACGME-approved program that accepts up to eight residents annually. Curriculum Overview

No two weeks are the same for residents in the program, who participate in a variety of clinical rotations, didactic lectures, and research activities throughout their four years of training. PGY-1 residents primarily rotate in inpatient psychiatry, spending specific months at both Arkansas State Hospital and the Acute Medically Involved unit at PRI. Didactic time is protected, with residents participating in weekly lectures, case discussions, and skills workshops to master crisis management, diagnosis, and patient care.

In PGY-2, residents gain broader exposure through rotations in consult-liaison psychiatry, psychotherapy, geriatric psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry, further solidifying their foundation for practice. PGY-3 focuses heavily on outpatient care, providing opportunities in several community mental health clinics, while the final year (PGY-4) allows for extensive elective rotations where residents can tailor their training to meet their specific interests and career goals.

Training Sites

Residents rotate through multiple affiliated training sites each selected for the diverse patient populations and conditions served, providing a comprehensive training experience:

• Psychiatric Research Institute (PRI): The PRI is the program's primary training facility. It houses inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and specialized programs such as interventional psychiatry.
• Arkansas State Hospital: Serves patients with severe and persistent mental illness. Residents gain experience with complex cases and often participate in legal procedures.
• Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System: This facility includes both the Little Rock and North Little Rock VA hospitals, where residents engage with veteran populations and participate in various psychiatric services.
• Centers for Youth & Families: This center focuses on mental health services for children, teens, and families, allowing residents to experience community psychiatry.
• Arkansas Children's Hospital: Offers rotations in child and adolescent psychiatry, with residents treating pediatric patients through various psychiatric disorders.

Research Opportunities

Research is a critical component of the program. Residents are encouraged to pursue academic interests and can engage in various projects during their training. UAMS provides an academic track designed to foster resident involvement in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and policy advocacy. The Department of Psychiatry also offers fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Addictions, and Geriatrics, paving the way for residents interested in subspecialty training.

Application Requirements

Application to the Psychiatry Residency Program is exclusively through ERAS. Candidates must possess prior clinical experience in the U.S., particularly in Psychiatry, ideally encompassing externships or observerships. The program does not impose a cutoff date for graduation years; however, applicants should note that the Arkansas State Medical Board has established restrictions on the number of attempts allowed on USMLE steps, limiting it to three attempts.
