University of Maryland Program

The Urology Residency Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center aims to educate trainees to be well-rounded urologists, preparing them for careers in private practice, clinical academic practice, or urologic research. The program emphasizes technical skills, adaptability to the evolving specialty, and high ethical standards, expecting residents to prioritize patient well-being. Throughout the residency, residents assume progressive patient care and operative responsibilities.

Application to the Urology Residency Program is through ERAS. The deadline for submitting applications is before October 1st. Required application components include ERAS Common Application Form, Medical School Transcript, Curriculum Vitae, 3 Letters of Recommendation, Personal Statement, and STEP 1 Scores. Interviews are conducted via a zoom platform from November to early December.

For foreign graduates, the program only sponsors J1 VISAs and requires ECFMG certification. The program does not sponsor H-1 Visas. Detailed information on the Urology Match and ERAS is available on the American Urological Association website.

The affiliated hospitals for the Urology Residency include the University of Maryland Medical Center, Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, Veterans Administration Medical Center at Baltimore, and Johns Hopkins Hospital Emergency Department. Each hospital offers unique exposure to diverse urologic cases and traumas, contributing to a comprehensive educational experience.

Residents at the University of Maryland Urology Residency engage in a variety of educational conferences, including Urology Grand Rounds, Morbidity & Mortality sessions, Case Conferences, Radiology Conferences, and Research activities. These sessions aim to enhance residents' knowledge and critical thinking skills in urologic care.

Research plays a significant role in the program's curriculum, with residents actively participating in urologic research projects during their clinical rotations. The division supports residents in pursuing research endeavors to advance urologic patient care and encourages critical thinking in interpreting urologic literature.

The program offers rotations at different hospitals like University of Maryland Medical Center, Veterans Administration Medical Center at Baltimore, Baltimore Washington Medical Center, and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Each rotation provides residents with diverse clinical experiences and opportunities to perform a wide range of urologic procedures under attending supervision.

Resident supervision is closely maintained throughout the program. Attendings are present during operations, rounds, and clinic sessions to ensure high-quality patient care and procedural training. The program emphasizes graded responsibility levels to foster residents' professional development and ensure they receive comprehensive urology training.
