The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler Psychiatry Residency program began in 2014 and evolved into its own Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in 2017. The program accepted its first class of residents in 2017, reaching full complement by 2020.
Residents have the opportunity to rotate at partnering psychiatric state hospitals - Rusk State Hospital and Terrell State Hospital, gaining experience in acute inpatient, child & adolescent, geriatric, and forensic units. Additionally, there is a partnership with the Cenikor Foundation substance abuse rehab/treatment center to address dependency issues.
As part of UT Health East Texas, the program offers diverse rotation opportunities across ten facilities in the East Texas region. The Rural Psychiatry program in Pittsburg allows residents to train in Tyler and experience a different setting.
The program emphasizes developing well-rounded psychiatrists who understand not only psychopharmacology but also their own biases, strengths, and the complexities of human interaction to create lasting change in patients' lives.
