Overview

The UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency Program emphasizes a holistic approach to medical care, preparing residents for a lifelong career in family medicine. The program aims to provide residents with comprehensive training that encompasses full-scope family medicine, including outpatient care, obstetrics, and emergency medicine. The Hinsdale campus features a high-tech hospital with a commitment to personalized care and community service.1

Curriculum Overview

The residency curriculum is designed to equip residents with the necessary skills to manage a diverse range of health issues across various patient demographics. This includes strong training in specialties such as internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN), and behavioral health. Residents will have the flexibility to engage in elective rotations to focus on specific interests within family medicine.1

First-Year Rotations

The first year begins with a comprehensive orientation, followed by rotations that include:

  • 1–2 half days of outpatient office hours per week
  • 3 blocks of Academic Medical Service (inpatient adult)
  • 1 block of pediatrics
  • 2 blocks of obstetrics
  • 1 block of general surgery or anesthesia
  • 2 weeks of pediatric night float and 2 weeks in ICU
  • 1 block in psychiatry
  • Introduction to Family Medicine
  • 1 block in the Emergency Department

By the end of the first year, residents will start to feel confident in their transition to becoming family physicians.1

Second-Year Rotations

During the second year, the curriculum includes:

  • 2-3 half days of outpatient office hours per week
  • 2 blocks of Academic Medical Service
  • 1 block each of ICU, pediatrics, obstetrics, nephrology, sports medicine, and practice management
  • 3 elective blocks

This phase allows residents to deepen their practical skills in family medicine settings while managing patient care.1

Third-Year Rotations

The final year focuses on refining skills in preparation for independence in practice:

  • 3-5 half days of outpatient office hours per week
  • Various electives, including geriatrics, gynecology, and endocrinology
  • Additional blocks in pediatrics outpatient, emergency department, dermatology, and ENT

The comprehensive experience ensures readiness for family medicine practice following graduation.1

Daily Educational Opportunities

Residents have multiple avenues for professional growth, including:

  • Monthly behavioral medicine and psychiatry conferences
  • Daily noon conferences with faculty
  • EKG conferences and journal clubs
  • Practice management series for upper years
  • Specialty clinics in areas like dermatology and high-risk obstetrics

Such educational structures enrich resident training and enhance clinical capabilities.1

Residents are encouraged to participate in longitudinal community medicine education and have opportunities for global health experiences, including a rotation in Peru.1
