Overview

The Ascension Resurrection Transitional Year Residency is a comprehensive ACGME-accredited program located in Chicago, Illinois. It is designed for physicians seeking foundational training before pursuing specialized residency programs such as radiology, radiation oncology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, dermatology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. The program emphasizes broad-based medical education, encompassing a wide array of clinical experiences and rotations.

With a capacity of 337 inpatient beds and over 11,000 admissions annually, Ascension Resurrection serves a diverse patient population, presenting residents with rich opportunities for hands-on clinical experience. The facility also caters to more than 40,000 emergency department patients each year, ensuring residents are engaged in a dynamic and active healthcare setting that is vital to the surrounding community

Follow this program

The Transitional Year follows a 13-block schedule made up of four-week rotations. This format is designed to give interns a balanced, immersive clinical experience across a variety of services during the year.

Core Rotation — Duration

Internal Medicine* — 12 weeks

Critical Care Unit (ICU)* — 4 weeks

Emergency Medicine* — 4 weeks

Pulmonary Service — 8 weeks

Ambulatory Care — 4 weeks

ICU Float Elective* — 4 weeks

*Indicates rotations that include night duty months. Night shifts average five to six per month depending on how many interns are assigned to the rotation.

Residents may choose up to five elective blocks (each four weeks in length) from the following options:

We strongly believe a successful physiatrist can understand and interpret the quality of scientific research. In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), all residents are expected to participate in and present scholarly work during their training period.

Additionally, all residents participate in at least one quality improvement project during their training. Once a project is selected, residents are paired with a research mentor to facilitate growth in scholarly activity and quality improvement.

Residents are encouraged to present their scholarly activity at major conferences – including the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Annual Assembly, the Association of Academic Physiatrists Annual Meeting, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, among others.

Thank you for your interest in the Resurrection Medical Center Transitional Year Residency. Our ACGME-accredited program provides a comprehensive, broad-based first postgraduate year of training for physicians who plan to continue into specialties such as radiology, radiation oncology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, dermatology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and other fields.

Resurrection Medical Center is a tertiary-care community hospital situated on Chicago's far northwest side. The hospital maintains an open-heart surgery program, on-site inpatient rehabilitation and hospice units, a cancer center, and an emergency department that serves a wide catchment area including O'Hare International Airport.

Medical education at Resurrection has been an institutional priority since the hospital opened in 1953. The Transitional Year is co-sponsored by our Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine residency programs. Major academic affiliations include Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and Midwestern University; students and residents from these institutions rotate through Resurrection Medical Center.

Our curriculum aims to provide a strong clinical foundation for subsequent specialty training. Residents function with meaningful responsibility while supported by an engaged attending staff in a collegial environment.
