Cleveland Clinic Foundation Program

The Cleveland Clinic Pathology Residency Program aims to train well-rounded pathologists who can effectively diagnose and consult clinically. The program provides a structured yet flexible educational environment to prepare residents for certification by the American Board of Pathology. Core rotations in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology are complemented by elective opportunities for subspecialty expertise and research contributions. Residents have interactions with world-renowned faculty, and the program offers various learning resources, including an annual book allowance and access to online resources like ExpertPath and PathPrimer. Residents are encouraged to engage in research opportunities and receive support to attend national meetings.

The program's Anatomic Pathology training structure includes subspecialty experiences throughout PGY1 and PGY3. Residents focus on surgical pathology, autopsy, cytopathology, dermatopathology, and forensic pathology. Clinical Pathology rotations occur in PGY2 and PGY4, allowing residents to concentrate on one discipline at a time without carry-over responsibilities from Anatomic Pathology rotations. The Clinical Pathology rotations include modules in areas such as Clinical Chemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology.

The program offers numerous educational conferences, including a core lecture series, tumor boards, and a summer boot camp lecture series. Residents have opportunities to teach medical students from Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and other programs, participate in medical professional training programs, and instruct at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine.

Research opportunities are prevalent within the program, with many residents participating in presentations at national meetings and publishing manuscripts yearly. The program focuses on translational research projects that evaluate new assays or diagnostic tests.

For application, ERAS is the platform for submission, and required documents include a complete ERAS application, medical school transcript, personal statement, letters of recommendation, photo, Medical Student Performance Evaluation, and USMLE and/or COMLEX scores. Invitations to interview are sent via ERAS email, and selected applicants are notified after the review process.
