Corewell Health East (Taylor) Program

The Ophthalmology Residency program at Corewell Health East (Taylor), formerly known as Beaumont Hospital, Taylor, offers a fully accredited three-year program in Ophthalmology leading to eligibility for certification by the AOBOO-HNS. The program accepts two positions each year through the San Francisco Match program. Each position is linked to the Beaumont Hospital Dearborn Transitional Year internship. Interviews are required for admission consideration and are typically offered to eligible candidates annually in November/December.

The program provides clinical training primarily under the supervision of core faculty at various private practice locations in the greater Detroit area. Residents gain exposure to a diverse patient population and a wide variety of pathology, managing the Ophthalmology consult and emergency services. They have opportunities to practice procedural skills such as intravitreal injections, laser procedures, and minor oculoplastic procedures. Second-year residents rotate through major ophthalmic subspecialties to deepen their field exposure and explore fellowship interests.

Surgical experience is integral to the program, with residents participating in basic extraocular surgical techniques during their transitional year and advancing through increasingly complex surgeries. Third-year residents, under faculty supervision, are heavily involved in cataract surgeries from pre-operative evaluation to post-operative care. The program provides access to an Eyesi surgical simulator and a home wet lab for further skill development.
