The Surgery Residency Program at Danbury Hospital, a 465-bed non-profit tertiary care medical center within Nuvance Health, provides comprehensive surgical training. As a 6-year residency program, residents benefit from a wide range of experiences across various surgical services, including general and minimally invasive surgery, trauma and acute care surgery, surgical oncology, colon and rectal surgery, vascular surgery, surgical critical care, breast and endocrine surgery, pediatric surgery, and transplant surgery.
The program boasts over 1000 cases annually at Danbury Hospital and New Milford Hospital, offering residents ample opportunities to exceed the required number of cases. A notable feature is the hospital's status as an ACS-designated Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center, enhancing residents' exposure to a diverse patient population with varied surgical needs.
Residents engage in clinical and basic science research after their second year of training, with a monthly journal club to foster an engaging learning environment. The program emphasizes mentorship, providing residents with dedicated faculty support and guidance throughout their training to assist in shaping successful career paths.
In addition, the program is affiliated with the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, offering residents opportunities to engage in teaching medical students and preparing for academic careers. A meritocracy program promotes healthy competition and efficiency in both clinical and administrative tasks.
The surgical simulation center, spanning 8000 sq. ft., enhances residents' surgical skills through tissue-based and inanimate simulation sessions, including exposure to robotics and minimally invasive surgery. This center fosters a hands-on learning environment to develop clinical proficiency.
For applicants, the program requires a Curriculum Vitae, three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, medical school transcripts, USMLE scores, ABSITE scores if applicable, and ECFMG Certificate if needed. Danbury Hospital's General Surgery Residency Program welcomes foreign medical graduates and sponsors H1B visas on a limited basis. Residents at Danbury Hospital find a supportive, challenging, and enriching environment to cultivate their surgical skills and knowledge.
