The Family Medicine Residency Program at ECU Health Medical Center / East Carolina University is dedicated to training competent family physicians equipped to address the needs of the diverse populations in eastern North Carolina. Program Overview

Curriculum

Intern Year Training

During the intern year (PGY-1), residents participate in various rotations, including outpatient experiences at the Family Medicine Center in addition to inpatient services. Initial weeks are spent in an extended orientation aimed to acclimatize residents to the clinical environment, followed by blocks focusing on Family Medicine Inpatient Service, which caters to high-acuity patients. Interns also engage in specialties including cardiology, intensive care, emergency medicine, newborn care, pediatrics, and geriatrics 2.

Training predominantly shifts to an outpatient focus during PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. Residents will work with specialists in areas including orthopedics, sports medicine, and gynecology among others, alongside elective opportunities that allow them to explore areas of personal interest. Rural Family Medicine residents will spend this time primarily in their continuity clinic sites and localized community hospitals, where they can provide essential care in resource-limited settings 3.

The residency program affords varied rotations both in hospital and outpatient settings. PGY-1s will spend significant time in the ECU Health Medical Center, gaining access to its resources, while later years will balance between specialties in the academic center and community-based experiences.
