The IMC Transitional Year Residency is a one-year program designed to provide residents with a broad clinical experience, preparing them for careers in various specialty fields such as anesthesiology, radiology, radiation oncology, dermatology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). Located in the Intermountain Health system, which is the largest healthcare system in Utah, the IMC Transitional Year Residency is based at the Intermountain Medical Center. This facility is a state-of-the-art tertiary care and Level 1 Trauma Center that houses the state's busiest Emergency Department, which sees over 80,000 patient visits annually. The medical campus features multiple specialty intensive care units and a full array of ambulatory clinics, providing an extensive training environment for transitional year residents who play a crucial role in delivering quality care within this healthcare system.

Program Structure

The residency consists of a structured curriculum encompassing thirteen four-week rotation blocks throughout the academic year. The first block commences on June 24, concluding with the final block ending on June 23 of the following year. Each block consists of two-week intervals known as A and B components, allowing a comprehensive exposure to various clinical settings. Transitional Year interns join categorical residents in each rotation, collaborating with upper-level University of Utah residents from corresponding departments ranging from surgery to emergency medicine.

Application Requirements

The program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants are required to submit the following through ERAS: a completed application form, a passing score on USMLE Step 1, three letters of recommendation, a Dean's letter, a personal statement, and evidence of U.S. clinical experience. It is important to note that the program does not sponsor visas for prospective residents.

Interview Process

Interviews for the IMC Transitional Year Residency take place virtually, with specific dates communicated along with invitations sent via ERAS to selected candidates. In some cases, additional limited interview dates may be available. Candidates also have the option to tour the Transitional Year program and Intermountain Medical Center upon request.

Salary and Benefits

The current salary for residents in this program is $71,500. The benefits package includes three weeks of paid personal leave, a 403(b) tax-deferred retirement plan, and complimentary ACLS training before the academic year begins. Other benefits such as free covered parking, food allowances during on-call periods and free meals during weekdays, 24-hour access to fitness facilities, full professional liability coverage, and affordable employer-supplemented medical, life, dental, and disability insurance are also provided.
