Loyola University Medical Center Program

The Loyola University Medical Center Program offers a robust Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program that has been rooted at Loyola for over 30 years. Loyola boasts a strong Med-Peds presence with dedicated full-time Med-Peds trained faculty overseeing outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, and medical education. The educational philosophies in Medicine and Pediatrics align well, allowing residents to manage patient care under attending supervision through daily teaching rounds, combining didactic teaching and bedside learning. Loyola provides a diverse training experience ranging from caring for extreme premies in a Level III NICU to managing LVADs in the CCU.

Residents benefit from working at Loyola's academic hospital setting, providing high-quality, evidence-based care to a diverse patient population. Rotations include subspecialty patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, exposure to a Level I Emergency Department, and care for veterans at the nearby Hines VA Hospital, one of the largest tertiary care VA hospitals in the region. Loyola supports residents throughout their training and fosters a close-knit Med-Peds community, offering ample opportunities for academic and clinical growth.

The Med-Peds residents at Loyola have a respectable standing within the institution and often join leadership roles within the medical community. Loyola Medicine has a reputation for training exceptional Internists and Pediatricians, with residents consistently exceeding national averages on board certifications.

The Loyola Med-Peds Program also integrates residents into the Department of Medicine's "4+1" schedule model to facilitate camaraderie and professional development among resident teams. Applicants are encouraged to apply through ERAS, with applications accepted until December 1st. Loyola aims to recruit a diverse group of residents from various backgrounds, providing mentorship and support to underrepresented physicians. Residents receive a comprehensive education through conferences, rotations, and online learning resources offered by the program.

Furthermore, Loyola's Med-Peds residents alternate rotations between the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics every four months, ensuring a well-rounded training experience.
