MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center Program
Overview
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City is designed to foster a small and diverse community of six residents per year. This program is marked by strong camaraderie among residents and faculty and is committed to both clinical excellence and resident wellness.
The residency includes a dedicated 18-bed, resident-run critical care unit, enabling residents to gain significant hands-on procedural experience during their intern year. Most residents become independently competent in performing ICU procedures by that time. Additionally, the program emphasizes a healthy work-life balance, offering residents events such as an annual retreat, social dinners, and outdoor activities.
Curriculum
The curriculum of the Internal Medicine Residency is meticulously crafted to meet the standards set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Internal Medicine. The clinical training is organized into four-week rotations, totaling 13 blocks throughout the residency. The first year includes major rotations in Inpatient Internal Medicine, ICU, and Ambulatory Clinic, alongside key experiences in Emergency Medicine, Radiology, and Palliative Care. The second and third years broaden the inpatient rotations and include subspecialties like Cardiology, Nephrology, and Endocrinology, allowing comprehensive exposure to various aspects of internal medicine.
1Application and Interview Process
The application process for the program is highly structured. Participation is through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and solely via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Key eligibility requirements include graduation from an accredited medical school within the last three years, three letters of recommendation (including one from an Internal Medicine physician), and certifications as necessary.
Additionally, the program provides support for visa requirements. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) may apply, but must meet specific stipulations, including a recommendation from a current staff member at MercyOne North Iowa and successful completion of an observership, if applicable.
3Benefits
The residency offers a competitive salary structure, with annual salaries increasing from $64,000 for first-year residents to $67,000 for third-year residents. Residents enjoy 21 working days off each year and substantial financial support for Continuing Medical Education (CME) attendance, alongside a comprehensive core benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision care, retirement plans, malpractice coverage, and more.
Housing support is prioritized for residents, and additional benefits include nutrition allowances for food, memberships for health clubs, and professional coverages for licenses and memberships in relevant medical organizations.
