The University of Iowa – Des Moines Internal Medicine Residency Program offers a robust training environment in a community-based, university-affiliated setting. Training at the University of Iowa – Des Moines takes place primarily at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center. Additional exposure is gained through rotations at Methodist West Hospital, the Des Moines VA Medical Center, and Broadlawns Medical Center. This diversity allows residents to see a varied patient demographic, enhancing their educational experience. Rotations include both inpatient and outpatient settings, facilitating a well-rounded medical education.

Curriculum Overview

The residency curriculum is structured into blocks, with four weeks of inpatient rotations followed by two weeks of ambulatory medicine in the first year. For second- and third-year residents, a traditional schedule allows ongoing continuity clinic participation once a week.

Stipend and Benefits

Residents in the program receive competitive stipends, which vary by training level. As of the academic year 2022-2023, the stipends are R1 - $67,305, R2 - $68,548, and R3 - $70,418, which reflects the program's commitment to providing equitable financial support. Additionally, residents receive benefits such as health and life insurance, liability coverage, and a relocation allowance.

Residents are offered 20 days of paid vacation annually and educational funds for conferences and resources. Additional benefits include free on-site fitness facilities and parking, alongside coverage for licensure fees and provisions for meals.

Application Process

The program is known for its inclusive application process. Eligible applicants must submit their applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Notably, the program sponsors J1 visas, which can be pivotal for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and osteopathic medical graduates (DOs).
