University of Iowa (Des Moines) Program

The University of Iowa - Des Moines Internal Medicine Residency Program is a community-based university-affiliated program that offers ten categorical and two preliminary medicine positions each year. The program provides a supportive, innovative, and collaborative learning environment where residents can develop a broad range of skills for a career in general internal medicine or subspecialty practice. The faculty consists of outstanding general Internists and subspecialists who provide one-on-one teaching and mentoring to residents.

The program offers rotations at various training sites, including Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Methodist West Hospital, Des Moines VA Medical Center, and Broadlawns Medical Center. Residents have the option to pursue primary care, hospital medicine, and subspecialty medicine training tracks to align with their career goals.

The curriculum includes a block format for inpatient rotations alternating with ambulatory medicine throughout the first year. Second- and third-year residents follow a traditional schedule and attend continuity clinic weekly. Residents also have opportunities to participate in ambulatory care medicine rotations, rural preceptorships, and subspecialty clinics.

The residency program emphasizes high-value care practices, leadership development, and provides ample opportunities for scholarly activities and research. Residents work closely with board-certified faculty members and have the opportunity to master various procedure skills through hands-on experience and simulation lab training.

The stipend and benefits for residents include competitive salaries, health insurance options, liability coverage, disability coverage, paid vacation, free parking, meal stipends, licensure fees, lab coats, and access to fitness and daycare services on campus.

The program accepts applications through ERAS and sponsors J1 visas, requiring ECFMG certification for consideration. The selection process is based on academic and clinical performance, letters of recommendation, personal qualities, and achievements. Residents are selected based on a competitive review process, and interviews are conducted starting in October.
