Curriculum Overview

The curriculum includes critical rotations across various departments, encompassing adult emergency medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, intensive care, and trauma services. Residents will experience rotations in:

• Adult Emergency Department
• Pediatric Emergency Department
• Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• Trauma Surgery
• Various elective rotations that include EMS Flight, Hospice/Palliative Care, Advanced Airway Management, and more.

The first year of residency consists of foundational training, which includes four weeks of orientation, followed by extensive clinical exposure and skill development. Subsequent years continue to build upon these skills with increasing autonomy and specialized training opportunities.

Didactic Education

Didactic sessions are an integral part of the training, occurring every Thursday morning. These sessions cover a wide array of emergency medicine topics and include simulation training to enhance procedural skills. Residents utilize the Dorner-Villeneuve Simulation Education Center for case-based learning experiences. The simulation curriculum includes essential skills such as airway management, central venous catheter insertion, and emergency delivery techniques to ensure preparedness for the complexities of real-world emergency situations.

The residency program emphasizes scholarly activity, requiring residents to engage in research projects throughout their training. Application Requirements and Competitiveness

The application process for the Iowa Methodist Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency is highly competitive. Applicants are expected to have completed at least six months of clinical experience in the U.S. Clinical experience must include hands-on interactions with patients; observerships do not qualify. Candidates are required to have a valid ECFMG certification if they graduated from a non-U.S. medical school. Additionally, the program sponsors J-1 visas for international medical graduates.
