National Capital Consortium (Fort Belvoir Community Hospital) Program

The National Capital Consortium Family Medicine Residency Program, based at Fort Belvoir, VA, is a distinguished military medical training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This program spans three years and offers a comprehensive education for residents aiming to become proficient family medicine physicians. It has a total approved complement of 45 residents, with an annual intake of up to 15 new residents per year.

The program serves as the largest unopposed military Family Medicine Residency and is unique in being the only Tri-Service Family Medicine Residency in the National Capital Region, demonstrating a commitment to collaborative and inter-service training. Its curriculum is specifically designed to encompass a broad array of areas including Lifestyle Medicine, Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), and Health Systems Science, providing residents with a robust and well-rounded education.

Curriculum & Rotations

The residency follows a structured curriculum that incorporates various instructional methods, from morning reports featuring case discussions, didactic lectures, and wellness modules to afternoon workshops and interactive sessions. These are held on weekday mornings and Wednesday afternoons to cover essential topics pertinent to family medicine.

Residents can engage in diverse areas throughout their training, witnessing the full spectrum of family medicine practices, including outpatient care, inpatient management, and specialized clinics such as geriatrics and minor procedures. Additionally, they will participate in the Tri-Service Sports Medicine Fellowship and may have opportunities for sports medicine rotations at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Each resident is also expected to undertake call shifts—PGY1 residents typically have two to three weekend call shifts along with scheduled OB calls, while PGY2 and PGY3 residents might encounter more extensive hours, including overnight calls.

Scholarly Activity and Research

The program encourages residents to engage in scholarly and quality improvement projects throughout their training. All residents are required to complete a practice improvement project and demonstrate contribution to clinical advancements. The annual research symposium is a highlight, providing an opportunity to showcase research endeavors, and residents often participate in conferences, where they can present posters and lead discussions.

Unique Program Features

The National Capital Consortium Family Medicine program prides itself on being a pioneering leader in military family medicine education. It has received Osteopathic Recognition from ACGME, demonstrating its commitment to training osteopathic residents. The curriculum includes additional training in military medicine, preparing residents to understand unique scenarios they may encounter while serving in the armed forces. Application Requirements

Applicants to the Family Medicine program must have graduated from medical school, and if they have completed an internship, they may be eligible to enter at the PGY2 level with prior approval. There are no categorical years required in a specialty for application. As a military program, it is also expected that applicants demonstrate a commitment to serving in the military community.

Visa sponsorship is available for appropriate candidates; the program typically supports J-1 and H-1B visas to accommodate international medical graduates.

Residents complete board eligibility requirements through rigorous training that prepares them for the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) exams. Osteopathic residents are presented with the option to take the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP) board exam.

The program also emphasizes leadership and teaching opportunities, culminating in a teaching symposium designed for resident educators, where advanced teaching techniques and leadership skills are nurtured.
