Nova Southeastern University - College of Osteopathic Medicine (Orlando) Program

The NSU-KPCOM Psychiatry Residency Program is a four-year training initiative affiliated with the Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, located primarily at the Orlando VA Healthcare System. This innovative program is designed to provide extensive training for physicians aiming to become proficient in general psychiatry with a primary focus on serving the public sector, notably in Veterans Health Administration and correctional settings.

The program is established in collaboration with several key clinical training sites, including the Orlando VAHCS, Lake Correctional Institution, Florida Women’s Reception Center, Lowell Correctional Institution, and Central Florida Behavioral Hospital, effectively combining didactic learning with hands-on clinical experience across diverse environments. Residents gain exposure to the full spectrum of psychiatric care, covering essential topics such as neuroscience, psychopharmacology, and psychotherapy through weekly academic half days dedicated to didactic sessions, as well as shared activities with the UCF/HCA Orlando psychiatry residency program, optimizing interdisciplinary training.

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of a well-structured rotation schedule aimed to impart a comprehensive understanding of psychiatric practices. Residents are expected to complete rotations across various specialties throughout their training. The first year includes key rotations in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, Neurology, and Inpatient Psychiatry, among others. In the subsequent years, residents will delve into specialized areas such as Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Emergency Psychiatry, and Geriatric Psychiatry. Notably, there is a flexibility within the curriculum to accommodate individual learning needs and goals, allowing residents to thrive in their professional development.

The Central Florida Behavioral Hospital serves as an emergency facility with tailored programs for inpatient and outpatient care.

The Florida Women’s Reception Center provides both psychiatric inpatient and residential programs, making it an essential site for training in treating severe and persistent mental illness. Research Opportunities
