The General Surgery Residency Program at Rutgers Health/New Jersey Medical School is a large and diverse program that offers a wide variety of clinical experiences across five hospitals. The program is accredited by the ACGME and includes categorical as well as designated and non-designated preliminary general surgery positions. Ten categorical residents are accepted each year, along with up to 18 preliminary PGY-1 and four preliminary PGY-2 residents.
The curriculum spans 5 years of clinical training and emphasizes early involvement in patient care with graded responsibility and supervision. Optional research years are also encouraged. Residents receive comprehensive exposure to various aspects of general surgery, trauma, emergency surgery, and specialized areas like vascular surgery, transplant surgery, surgical oncology, plastic surgery, among others.
The training sites include University Hospital in Newark, East Orange Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, and Jersey City Medical Center. The program also supports residents pursuing advanced degrees during their research leave.
The application process involves submission through ERAS, and the department requires three letters of recommendation, a Dean's Letter, CV, personal statement, medical school transcript, and USMLE score reports. Foreign medical graduates are considered for preliminary positions but not for categorical spots. The interview process is personalized and involves various faculty members.
For residents interested in lifelong learning and acquiring a breadth of surgical skills in a diverse and supportive environment, the Rutgers NJMS General Surgery Residency Program offers a rich educational experience under the guidance of dedicated faculty.
