Deborah Heart and Lung Center offers an ACGME accredited Fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, conducted in partnership with Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. This esteemed program is positioned within a robust institution recognized for its high standards in cardiovascular care.

The Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship Program accepts one fellow per year who has completed a cardiology fellowship. The fellowship spans one year and provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of advanced heart failure, encompassing right, left, and biventricular failure, along with hands-on experience with Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs). Notably, Deborah is the only center in South Jersey offering durable LVAD placement, performing approximately 15-20 annually. Fellows are also trained at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) for a four-month cardiac transplant experience.

The training encompasses various aspects necessary for effective patient care. This includes hospital management of advanced heart failure, thorough pre- and post-heart transplant evaluation, hemodynamic management, and outpatient care strategies. Fellows also acquire skills in advanced procedures such as Swan-Ganz catheter placements and management. The program's high patient volume ensures that fellows gain substantial practical experience, with over 660 inpatient heart failure consults and more than 3,000 outpatient visits each year.

Application Process and Eligibility

To be eligible for the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship, applicants must have completed an Internal Medicine residency and a Cardiology fellowship. The selection process is competitive, reflecting the program's reputation and the caliber of training offered. It is crucial to note that the program does not currently sponsor visa applications for international medical graduates (IMGs) or host J1 visa support. This factor may affect the decisions of potential applicants who require such sponsorship.
