Stony Brook Medicine Program

The Psychiatry Residency Program at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH) is designed to provide an extensive training experience in community and addiction psychiatry. Established in 1978, the program has a rich history as one of the first four psychiatry residency programs in the Stony Brook School of Medicine. The focus on community psychiatry allows residents to gain experience in both academic and community-based settings, enriching their training and preparing them for diverse career paths.

Residents begin their journey with a comprehensive curriculum. The first year (PGY-1) includes four months of Medicine and two months of Neurology rotations at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, complemented by four months of Inpatient Psychiatry at SBELIH and two months in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) at Stony Brook University Hospital. This phase establishes a strong foundation in clinical psychiatry practices. PGY-2 residents divide their time between SBELIH and Stony Brook University Hospital, while third-year residents focus on outpatient services, particularly at Quannacut Outpatient Services, addressing a significant demand for behavioral health care on Long Island’s East End.

Academic Program

The program emphasizes academic excellence, engaging residents in extensive reading of core texts and active participation in various seminars and clinical conferences. Didactic time is protected to ensure that residents can focus on learning without distractions from patient care responsibilities. Both PGY-1 and PGY-2 years include courses covering psychopathology and psychopharmacology, alongside practical skills training in interviewing and note-writing. The curriculum also features a biweekly Journal Club where residents critically discuss current psychiatric literature, enhancing their ability to assess and apply research in clinical settings.

As residents progress to the PGY-3 year, the focus shifts to psychotherapy, integrating theories of group, family, and marital therapy with advanced outpatient psychopharmacology. Senior residents (PGY-4) participate in didactics that prepare them for their careers with advanced discussions on psychotherapy and psychopharmacological treatments.

Training Sites and Experience

The diverse settings of training encompass both urban and community environments, allowing residents to cultivate a broad range of skills necessary for future practice. The relationships built within the relatively small program size lead to personalized mentorship and guidance. The program is regarded as competitive and welcomes applications from D.O. and international medical graduates, making it accessible to a wide range of candidates.
