TriHealth (Bethesda North Hospital) Program

The TriHealth (Bethesda North Hospital) Family Medicine Residency Program, based in Cincinnati, offers a comprehensive curriculum constructed around the patient-centered medical home model, which places a significant emphasis on the role of family physicians within the evolving healthcare system. Established in 1987, the program has a rich history of producing well-prepared graduates, with more than 150 alumni practicing across the nation.

Residency and Fellowship Training: The program accommodates six residents per year alongside two sports medicine fellows. It prides itself on providing clinical experiences in various settings, including Bethesda North Hospital, the Family Practice office, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, and numerous physician offices across Cincinnati. The program emphasizes an unopposed setting with moments of collaboration, particularly with surgery and OB residents, fostering a conducive learning environment through combined guidance and teaching.

Faculty and Research: The faculty comprises six physicians with diverse interests, including women’s health, pediatrics, practice management, research, and sports medicine, supplemented by a seventh faculty member specializing in psychology and behavioral medicine. The program stands out as the top publishing community-based family medicine program nationwide, contributing significantly to literature with 77 publications, 54 published residents, and 25 research awards.

Curriculum: The curriculum is meticulously designed to cover a broad spectrum of essential skills and knowledge areas, integrating experiences in behavioral health, geriatric patient care, occupational medicine, dermatology, and several subspecialties through elective rotations. It also includes unique opportunities for practical learning and skill development in outpatient settings, emergency departments, and through rotations at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

International Graduates: For international medical graduates, eligibility for licensure in Ohio, ECFMG certification, and status as US citizens or permanent residents are necessary. Applicants should have graduated from medical school within the last three years and ideally possess some meaningful hospital experience within the U.S. healthcare system.

Application Process: The application process emphasizes the inclusion of three letters of recommendation, a dean's letter, or Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), with the emphasis on one recommendation being from a family medicine preceptor. All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by December 31. The program provides lodging for out-of-town applicants, underscoring its commitment to an inclusive and supportive selection process.
