The University of Kentucky Rural (Morehead) Family Medicine Residency Program at UK St. Claire is dedicated to developing future physician partners to deliver quality healthcare to rural populations. Program Structure

The program is sponsored by the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and is located at UK St. Claire in Morehead, Kentucky. Residents participate in a structured residency program that adheres to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards. The training facility includes continuity clinics located at the Center for Health, Education & Research (CHER), facilitating hands-on experiences and direct patient care from the first year.

The University of Kentucky Rural Family Medicine Residency offers a well-rounded curriculum that includes outpatient practice continuity, inpatient care, and a variety of specialty rotations. The residency encourages the development of a continuity panel of patients to build long-term relationships and practice across all age groups, including pediatrics, obstetrics, and geriatrics.

Curriculum and Rotations

The residency program features a competency-based overarching curriculum. The first year (PGY-1) includes mandatory rotations in family and community medicine, emergency medicine, inpatient pediatrics, critical care, surgery, and several specialty areas. The PGY-2 and PGY-3 years focus on longitudinal experiences in outpatient family medicine, management for health systems, and various electives.

During the training, residents actively engage in multiple areas of family care, including rotations through specialties such as behavioral medicine, gastroenterology, women's health, and sports medicine. Each resident pairs with a rural faculty mentor, further enriching their training experience through personalized guidance and support.

Application Requirements

Interested applicants must meet several key requirements: graduation from medical school within the last five years, completion of at least one year of U.S. clinical experience, passing scores on Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE or COMLEX exams (with a maximum of three attempts), current ECFMG status, and three letters of recommendation. The program exclusively sponsors J1 visas and only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Competitiveness and Diversity

The hospital prides itself on being friendly toward both DO and IMG candidates, promoting a diverse cohort of residents. However, the program is competitive, with a high volume of applicants vying for limited positions. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview, which underscores the program’s selective nature.

Training Sites

The primary training site is St. Claire Regional Medical Center, the largest rural hospital in Eastern Kentucky, offering 159 beds and a range of medical specialties. Additional training and continuity clinics are available throughout the surrounding counties, ensuring diverse clinical exposure. UK HealthCare partners with regional providers to enhance educational access and patient care quality.

Stipends and Benefits

Residents receive competitive stipends starting at $60,779 in their first year, along with benefits including vacation days, CME allowances, and comprehensive insurance coverage. Benefits enhance the resident experience and support their professional development throughout the residency period.

Osteopathic Recognition

The residency program has achieved Osteopathic Recognition, which integrates osteopathic principles throughout training. Residents receive specialized training in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) and have structured curricula to support OPP knowledge application in clinical settings. This includes opportunities for mentorship with osteopathic faculty and participation in assessments specific to osteopathic practice.
