The Tulane University Psychiatry Residency Program is designed to provide a comprehensive and current foundation in psychiatry, ensuring that residents are equipped with the latest clinical knowledge and skills. Curriculum and Training

The Tulane Psychiatry training program is structured over four years and includes a variety of clinical rotations across multiple sites, providing residents with exposure to diverse patient populations and treatment modalities. Residents rotate through several facilities, including the University Medical Center, New Orleans VA Medical Center, East Jefferson Hospital, and St. Charles Parish Hospital. This array of locations ensures a robust clinical experience that encompasses treating patients from different cultures and backgrounds, including individuals who have experienced multiple traumas (1).

Sub-specialty Tracks

The program offers several sub-specialty training options. These include:

• A triple board program combining Psychiatry, Child/Adolescent Psychiatry, and Pediatrics
• A combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency
• Fellowships in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Addiction Psychiatry
• A Chief Resident position focused on Quality Improvement
• An Academic Clinician Educator track for future educators and researchers
• A dedicated Research Pathway for residents aiming for a career in academia

Research Opportunities

For residents interested in pursuing research, the Psychiatry Resident Research Track is specifically designed to prepare participants for academic positions where a strong record of scholarly output is essential. This track emphasizes experiential learning and includes essential training areas such as study design, project formulation, and grant writing. Residents engage in bi-monthly meetings and mentorship opportunities to develop their research skills, with a focus on producing valuable research outputs before graduation (3).

Application Process

The application process for the Tulane Psychiatry Residency Program is competitive, with seven categorical PGY-1 openings available each year, alongside additional positions for combined internal medicine and psychiatry programs. Applicants must apply through ERAS and submit required materials that include a personal statement, official transcripts, and letters of recommendation. While a minimum USMLE score of 220 is preferred for international medical graduates (IMGs), the program evaluates overall applications comprehensively. Applicants should have graduated within five years of applying. Observerships and externships are not available, and there is no acceptance of H visas; however, J1 visa sponsorship is provided for eligible foreign applicants (2).

Interview Process

The interview process typically takes place from mid-October to the end of January and involves a detailed itinerary that includes a tour of the facilities, participation in a Grand Rounds session, and one-on-one interviews with faculty and program leadership. The entire process allows potential candidates to get a thorough understanding of the program’s culture and offerings (2).
