University of Connecticut School of Medicine Program

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program at UConn Health/Hartford Hospital/Gaylord Specialty Healthcare is designed to train future rehabilitation experts. This program is the first of its kind in the state of Connecticut and aims to enhance the clinical skills and leadership qualities of its residents across a multifaceted curriculum. The mission of the program is to produce proficient medical doctors who excel in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of disabling, neuro-musculoskeletal, and complex medical conditions.

The residency program incorporates a collaborative model across three key institutions: UConn Health, Hartford Hospital, and Gaylord Hospital. UConn Health is recognized nationally for its state-of-the-art facilities, particularly in neuroscience research. Hartford Hospital serves as a Level I trauma center and boasts an extensive history of clinical excellence. Gaylord Hospital specializes in rehabilitation care and is known for its innovative programs, including the largest adaptive sports initiative in the region and cutting-edge research through the Gaylord Milne Institute for Healthcare Innovation.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum includes a balanced mix of clinical exposure and structured didactic training. Residents benefit from interactive workshops, board review courses, and mentorship programs that facilitate a stepwise increase in clinical autonomy. Didactic sessions are well-structured, designed to deepen medical knowledge essential for board examinations.

A notable feature of the curriculum is the dedicated time allocated for scholarly activities, including research, quality improvement projects, and teaching opportunities, all within an environment that fosters self-analyses and inquiry.

Clinical Rotations

Rotations are carefully crafted to ensure comprehensive exposure to varied clinical settings. The residents will predominantly split their inpatient rehabilitation experience between Gaylord Hospital and Hartford Hospital, while the majority of outpatient care occurs at Hartford Hospital and its affiliated centers. Additional structured rotation experiences will take place at Connecticut Children’s, the Hospital for Special Care, and within the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. The program provides four weeks of vacation per year to support work-life balance.

Training Sites

The training sites play a crucial role in the residency experience. UConn Health is a vastly integrated academic medical center advancing in research and clinical care. Hartford Hospital, with its substantial bed capacity and extensive surgical practice, ensures high-quality training with over 41,000 discharges annually. Gaylord Hospital, known for its long-term acute care, offers extensive rehabilitation services and is unique for its comprehensive certification in rehabilitation specialties.

The Hospital for Special Care and Connecticut Children’s also contribute to the training arsenal, providing exposure to unique populations and conditions, thus broadening the residents' clinical experience and expertise.

Resident Well-Being

The program prioritizes resident well-being by offering a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and mental health support. There are numerous events established to ensure social connection among residents, including mixers and holiday celebrations. Residents are paired with faculty mentors to facilitate both academic and personal growth. Additional support through a structured mentorship system ensures that residents can rely on senior colleagues as they navigate their training.

Application Process

Applying to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program requires a completed application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), including dean's letters, transcripts, board scores, and three letters of recommendation. The program emphasizes diversity and inclusion and does not discriminate based on gender, race, or other protected status. Specific application requirements may be implemented, notably for graduates of the past few years, and the program's competitiveness is favorable for both DO and IMG applicants, although the selection process is inherently competitive.

Visa Support

The residency program provides visa sponsorship for eligible applicants, typically sponsoring J-1 and H-1B visas. This makes the program more accessible to international medical graduates seeking to pursue their training in the United States, thereby enhancing diversity within the program.
