The Neuropathology Fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System is a prestigious two-year training program focused on advancing expertise in diagnostic neuropathology. This fellowship engages fellows in a comprehensive curriculum and extensive clinical experience, drawing from a diverse patient population associated with multiple leading healthcare institutions including Jackson Health System, University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which is the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida.

Curriculum

Fellows in the Neuropathology program are provided with extensive experience in the evaluation of a high volume of cases, as the program serves one of the busiest brain tumor centers in the nation. The clinical training includes assessment of over 1,000 in-house CNS tumors, pediatric and adult autopsies, along with muscle biopsies and consultations. The fellows are involved in the multidimensional evaluation of cases, including exposure to rare infectious diseases impacting the CNS.

The fellowship is designed to ensure that participants obtain substantial procedural experience, conducting between 150-200 autopsies annually. Moreover, fellows are actively encouraged to engage in various clinical research projects which not only enrich their learning experience but also foster their potential for contributing to published literature in peer-reviewed journals.

Educational Opportunities

Beyond the core training in neuropathology, the program offers elective rotations in different pathology subspecialties, such as Molecular Pathology, Pediatric Pathology, Cytopathology, and Head & Neck Pathology. This diversity in training ensures fellows can tailor their educational experience to align with their individual career aspirations. The program culminates in eligibility for the American Board of Pathology examination in Neuropathology, providing another avenue for professional certification.

Application Process

Applications to the fellowship must be submitted during the designated period from July 1 to August 15, two years preceding the academic year. Interested candidates are required to submit a comprehensive application that includes the CAP fellowship application, a current CV, and three letters of recommendation directed to the Program Director.

Competitiveness and Special Requirements

The Neuropathology Fellowship is recognized as a competitive program, attracting applicants from diverse backgrounds including U.S. medical graduates, DOs, and International Medical Graduates (IMGs). There are no specified maximum limitations on failed Step exams, but candidates should ideally present a strong academic performance throughout their medical education.

Visa Sponsorship
