Program Overview
The fellowship spans a comprehensive 12-month period, offering trainees exposure to a variety of clinical settings, including athletic coverage at two NCAA Division I universities—University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University—as well as local high school events. The fellowship includes involvement with over 45 varsity teams combined and the chance to manage student-athlete care effectively.
1Curriculum
The curriculum is meticulously structured around both required longitudinal experiences and elective rotations. Key features include:
- Real-world training through outpatient non-operative orthopedic sports medicine clinics 1-2 half-days weekly.
- Exposure to outpatient primary care sports medicine clinics for 2-4 half-days weekly.
- Hands-on experience in athletic team training room clinics for both the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University 4-5 half-days weekly.
- Involvement with high school athletics, including half-day weekly clinics.
- Dedicated continuity clinic in the primary specialty one half-day weekly.
- Structured teaching and research skill development.
- Diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound training for 1-2 half-days weekly.
Required Rotations and Electives
Fellows are mandated to complete rotations in several critical fields including:
- Musculoskeletal Diagnostic Imaging
- Physical and Occupational Therapy
- Sports Neurology
- Sports Nutrition
- Orthopedic Surgery covering adult and pediatric needs.
Furthermore, elective rotations are available in diverse disciplines allowing fellows to tailor their education based on individual interests.
Throughout this educational experience, fellows are encouraged to engage in research efforts, attend national conferences such as the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), and contribute to didactic core curricula.
6Application Requirements
The application process runs from July 15 to September 1, and the program offers two available positions. Interested applicants must demonstrate board eligibility or certification in their prime specialty, ensuring they are either active or scheduled to take board examinations shortly thereafter. Significant dedication to a career in teaching and/or research in sports medicine is a requisite.
2Visa Support
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking admission to the fellowship must possess a J-1 Visa. The program can sponsor J-1 visas which allow for the necessary participation in fellowship training, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.
