University of Puerto Rico Program

The University of Puerto Rico offers a comprehensive Pathology Residency Program through its Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, located in Río Piedras. The program's mission aims to provide high-quality pathology education, enabling residents to excel as community practitioners, scholars, and laboratory medical directors. It is fully accredited and offers two main training tracks: an Anatomic Pathology track that spans three years and a combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology track that extends over four years, both of which prepare residents for Board eligibility and certification by the American Board of Pathology.

Anatomic Pathology Training

The Anatomic Pathology (AP) track equips residents with the technical capabilities and diagnostic expertise essential for interpreting both common and unique cases across surgical, cytological, and autopsy specimens. The training emphasizes accurately detailing gross and microscopic findings, aligning them with clinical histories to reach conclusive diagnoses. The autopsy service handles approximately 120 autopsies annually and encompasses a variety of pathologies.

Training Facilities

During surgical pathology rotations, residents process more than 10,000 surgical specimens each year, gaining hands-on experience under the supervision of knowledgeable staff pathologists. Intra-operative consultations allow residents to collaborate with surgeons, enhancing their competence in performing and interpreting frozen section preparations. The program also includes a dedicated three-month rotation in cytopathology, focusing on both genital and non-genital cytologies, coupled with fine needle aspiration procedures. Unique rotations in dermatopathology and forensic pathology further enrich the residents' educational experience.

Clinical Pathology Training

The Clinical Pathology (CP) track familiarizes residents with laboratory operations, underscoring daily analytical procedures and quality control measures. Residents engage with both the theoretical and practical parameters of laboratory medicine and serve as liaisons between clinicians and the clinical laboratory, addressing any emergent issues regarding lab tests.

Main Rotations

Main rotations in the Clinical Pathology track include Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Hematology and Coagulation, Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine, Laboratory Administration, and Molecular Pathology. The residency evaluation process entails annual contract renewals predicated on satisfactory completion of rotations and tests, with assessments conducted at consistent intervals throughout the training.

Requirements for Admission

To apply for the residency program, candidates must graduate from an LCME-accredited medical school in the USA or meet specific additional requirements if they are foreign medical graduates. All applicants must submit a complete application through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) via ERAS, along with a curriculum vitae, a personal statement detailing their professional interests, official transcripts (both premedical and medical school), and letters of recommendation. Notably, foreign graduates should possess an ECFMG Certificate and provide a visa permit if they are not U.S. citizens. Candidates must also be proficient in both English and Spanish and should have USMLE Parts I & II completed.

Visa Support

The program is supportive of International Medical Graduates (IMGs), providing necessary documentation for visa requirements, including J-1 visas for residents who need sponsorship during their training.
