University of South Florida Morsani Program

Forensic pathology training at the University of South Florida (USF) is an immersive program centered at the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Department in Tampa. Hillsborough County is notable for its population base of 1,408,000 residents and covers a geographic area of 1072 square miles. The office conducts around 2000 death investigations annually, of which over 1100 involve in-depth autopsies, providing an extensive learning platform for fellows.

Mission and Program Emphasis

The program's mission is to equip fellows with comprehensive forensic pathology training essential for competent practice in various settings. The program aims for fellows to achieve American Board of Pathology Diplomate status in Forensic Pathology, with extensive exposure to diverse autopsy cases. Each fellow will hone skills applicable to both traumatic and non-traumatic death scenarios, gathering analytical and cognitive abilities necessary for expert consultation in the legal and medical communities.

Integration and communication with law enforcement, legal representatives, and healthcare professionals are core components of training. Interdisciplinary conferences are emphasized to ensure fellows develop well-rounded professional competencies.

Curriculum and Required Rotations

Throughout the fellowship, fellows will perform more than 200 autopsies, participate in depositions, and may testify in court, primarily regarding homicide trials. A key component of the training includes spending two days at the Tampa Regional Crime Laboratory of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, alongside attending a week-long course in forensic anthropology at Mercyhurst University, PA. The curriculum encourages consultation with forensic toxicologists on site, enhancing the fellows’ understanding in toxicology.

The fellowship also involves case supervision and daily teaching conferences covering various aspects of forensic pathology, including discussions on fixed brains and hearts as well as journal reviews.

Investigation and Learning Environment

Fellows are appointed as Associate Medical Examiners, allowing for direct involvement in scene investigations and autopsy procedures. The program cultivates a congenial and vibrant learning atmosphere focused on fostering lifelong professionalism and collaboration among peers. Regular participations in morbidity and mortality conferences at affiliated hospitals further enrich the educational experience.

Facilities

The facilities for the fellowship encompass a state-of-the-art complex established in 2008, equipped with autopsy rooms, coolers, and toxicology laboratories, all located within proximity to the USF medical school grounds. The favorable climate of Tampa allows for efficient completion of scene investigations without adverse winter-related disruptions.

Application Requirements and Selection Criteria

Fellowship candidates are generally those who have completed the required training in Anatomical Pathology from ACGME-accredited programs. Beginning in 2024-25, the program will participate in the National Resident Matching Program. Candidates should be aware that starting salaries stand at $95,000, with comprehensive benefits available as outlined on USF resources.
