The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Program offers a General Surgery Residency at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. The five-year program, accredited in 2021, will welcome its first set of residents in July 2022. Residents will have the opportunity to train at Valley Baptist Medical Center, the first Level II trauma center in the Rio Grande Valley, with plans to become a Level I trauma center soon.

Additionally, residents can benefit from external rotations at Methodist Specialty Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, and Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. The program boasts a diverse core faculty covering various specialties such as general surgery, trauma/critical care, burn surgery, surgical oncology, and other surgical subspecialties.

Application requirements include submitting the application through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). The program follows ACGME requirements for a five-year program and prefers recent graduates with medical school graduation dates within three years of application submission. Applicants must provide a curriculum vitae, personal statement, ERAS application, transcripts, letters of recommendation, official test scores, and other specified documents.

The program conducts interviews between October and January, and the application deadline for consideration is October 15th.
