Didactic sessions and clinical experiences focus on ambulatory medicine, hospital-based medicine, and medical specialties.
Research plays a significant role in the program, and residents are encouraged to utilize various resources available, including a statistician, library, and a full-time librarian. The residency program maintains a strong tie with Northeast Ohio Medical University, providing opportunities for residents to teach and work with medical students.
Application requirements include standard components such as the Dean's letter, medical school transcript, written personal statement, three letters of recommendation, USMLE Scores Part I and Part II, and ECFMG Certification if applicable. The program offers nine categorical PGY1 positions and six preliminary PGY1 positions annually. Selection criteria include recent medical school graduation, USMLE Step I and II passage, and consideration for J-1 visa sponsorship on a case-by-case basis.
The curriculum is structured over three years, with rotations in Ward Medicine, MICU, primary care, electives, and various subspecialties. Third-year residents focus on fine-tuning ICU skills, consultative roles, electives, and more advanced supervision responsibilities.
The program encourages leadership and academic skills development through committee involvement, research projects, and mentorship opportunities. About one-third of graduates pursue fellowships, one-third enter primary care, and the remaining balance opt for Hospitalist Medicine. The Internal Medicine program has a long history of ACGME accreditation and offers high-quality training in a friendly, interactive environment.
