Training Rotations

First-Year Residents (PGY-1)

During the first year, residents spend significant time in otolaryngology, complemented by rotations in general surgery, oral surgery, radiology, neurosurgery, and surgical intensive care. This experience is crucial for preparing residents for full-time service in the subsequent years.

1

Second-Year Residents (PGY-2)

As second-year residents, individuals take on responsibilities including pre- and postoperative care of inpatients and consult services, allowing them to apply their clinical knowledge in real-world scenarios and gain surgical experience in common procedures.

1

Third-Year Residents (PGY-3)

Third-year residents build upon their previous experience engaging in more complex surgeries and have dedicated time for clinical and research activities, further consolidating their medical knowledge and surgical competence.

1

Fourth-Year Residents (PGY-4)

Fourth-year residents perform major head and neck surgeries, managing both outpatient clinics and inpatient care while supervising junior residents. This year emphasizes surgical leadership and teaching skills.

1

Chief Residents (PGY-5)

As chief residents, trainees supervise junior residents and manage clinical responsibilities fully. They also engage in didactic training for medical students and carry out major surgical procedures independently.

1

Curricular Innovations and Research Opportunities

The Otolaryngology Program emphasizes innovation in residency training, incorporating workshops and simulations for practical learning. Residents participate in an “ENT Boot Camp” that covers common ENT emergencies, alongside advanced surgical techniques.

1

Research plays a pivotal role in the program. Each resident is required to undertake a quality improvement project and engage in writing a CORE style grant proposal prior to their research rotation.

1

Resident Wellness Initiatives

Acknowledging the rigorous nature of residency, the program places a significant emphasis on resident wellness through dedicated time off for personal health appointments and an annual wellness retreat aimed at promoting resilience and well-being.
