Welcome to the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Cooper University Health Care. This program is a well-structured four-year advanced diagnostic radiology residency accredited through the ACGME. Each year, the program accepts five residents through the ERAS match program, focusing on training clinically-oriented diagnostic radiologists who can thrive in both academic and community environments. A strong emphasis is placed on a team-oriented approach, and a harmonious camaraderie exists between residents and faculty within the reading room.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is designed to ensure residents attain the knowledge and skills necessary as outlined by the American Board of Radiology. It involves a system-based approach covering subspecialties such as neuroradiology, musculoskeletal, and pediatric radiology. The Department has set specific objectives to guide residents through clinical rotations based on their year of residency. Each resident engages in approximately 13 rotations each year, including general radiology, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, pediatrics, body CT, and musculoskeletal imaging among others. This structure allows residents to accumulate knowledge and develop technical skills, essential for making informed decisions in their practice.1

Daily lectures are conducted by fellowship-trained radiologists using various formats including formal presentations, case reviews, and interactive discussions, with continual updates based on resident feedback as well as new developments in the field. The program organizes an emergency radiology boot camp specifically for first-year residents, providing them with preparatory training for call duties.

Clinical Rotations

First-Year Rotations include:

• General Radiology/Plain Films
• Fluoroscopy
• Nuclear Medicine
• Pediatrics
• Body CT
• Neuroradiology

Second-Year Rotations add more advanced topics, such as Body MR, Interventional Radiology, Mammography, and additional pediatric experiences at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) alongside research opportunities.

By the third year, residents focus on advanced clinical practices, including intensive experience with body CT and MRI, IR, and a two-week rotation at the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) to enhance their understanding of radiological and pathological manifestations of diseases.

Research and Academic Opportunities

Throughout the residency, ample opportunities for research are provided. Residents are encouraged to engage in mentored research projects, and the program offers a dedicated curriculum focusing on the essential principles of research. Biannual research speed dating events enable residents to connect with faculty involved in various research areas, promoting collaboration and exploration of new project ideas. The program also emphasizes Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, integrating these components into the residents' responsibilities during their training.2

Support for International Medical Graduates

The program is friendly to international medical graduates and sponsors J-1 visas. Specific application procedures include providing ECFMG certification, USMLE/COMLEX scores, and a robust portfolio of clinical experience.3

Application Requirements

To apply for the program, applicants must submit the ERAS application containing the common application form, curriculum vitae, medical school transcript, three original letters of recommendation, personal statement, and relevant USMLE/COMLEX scores. A minimum of one year training in an ACGME-accredited program is required, and preference is given to those who have graduated within the past five years.4
