The Florida Atlantic University Neurology Residency Program is a four-year categorical program accredited by the ACGME that aims to train highly competent neurologists. The program is located at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute and Boca Raton Regional Hospital, providing residents with an extensive array of clinical experiences. The unique structure of the institute allows for innovative patient care and research, with outpatient clinics on the first floor and inpatient services above, facilitating seamless teamwork and continuity of care.

During the PGY-1 year, residents partake in a year of internal medicine which includes four months dedicated to inpatient neurology service. The focus of the PGY-2 year shifts to inpatient neurology with additional outpatient rotations in Epilepsy, EMG, and Movement Disorders. This experience is vital for residents, enabling them to integrate their knowledge into practice while managing complex cases. The residents support a comprehensive stroke program during weekdays and utilize a tele-stroke service for after-hours care, ensuring they gain expertise in acute neurological management.

Resident Rotations

The residency encompasses distinct rotations designed to provide comprehensive exposure to neurology and related fields:

• PGY-1: Internal Medicine, Medical ICU, Emergency Medicine, with four months in Inpatient Neurology.
• PGY-2: Inpatient Neurology, Night Medicine, Outpatient Continuity Clinic, and specialized outpatient clinics.
• PGY-3: Both Inpatient and Outpatient Neurology, Pediatric Neurology, Night Medicine, and Psychiatry.
• PGY-4: Focused rotations on Inpatient Neurology, Pediatric Neurology, electives, and Outpatient Continuity Clinic.

Residents have opportunities to tailor their experience through elective rotations in various subspecialties, such as Neuroimmunology, Epilepsy, and Movement Disorders. This is crucial for developing specific interests and expertise.

Research Opportunities

The program emphasizes scholarly activity, encouraging residents to engage in clinical and basic science research. Opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at national meetings help residents build an impressive professional portfolio. Additionally, recognition in research competitions bolsters the academic profile of residents.

Conferences and Didactics

Conferences are an integral part of the residency experience, fostering collaboration and continuous learning. Daily conferences are held, particularly during PGY 2-4, focusing on case discussions and educational lectures. A residency boot camp occurs at the end of June, equipping new residents with essential skills and knowledge necessary for success in neurology.

Teaching Hospitals

The primary teaching facility is the Boca Raton Regional Hospital, recognized for its comprehensive stroke center services. The Marcus Neuroscience Institute features advanced technology and a diverse range of specialized neurological care services. Additionally, residents rotate through Delray Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center, which provide opportunities to fulfill psychiatry and pediatric neurology requirements respectively, allowing residents to gain a broad range of experiences.

Application Process and Requirements

The application process for the residency program requires submission through the ERAS system, including personal statements, letters of recommendation, and USMLE or COMLEX Step scores. The program accepts J1 visa applicants but does not sponsor visas itself. The program is competitive, interviewing approximately 40-60 candidates for three available positions annually, without a cutoff for years since graduation, but suggesting that clinical experience is beneficial.

Visa Sponsorship

The Florida Atlantic University Neurology Residency Program does not sponsor H1B visas. However, it accepts J1 visa applicants, provided that they have ECFMG certification.

Competitiveness of the Program

The program strives to create a diverse applicant pool, demonstrating friendliness towards both DO and IMG applicants. While there are no specific minimum score requirements for Step 1 and 2, strong performances are encouraged to enhance competitiveness during the application process. Yet, even applicants with low scores may still be considered if they demonstrate potential through other aspects of their application.
