The Ponce Emergency Medicine Residency Program offers a comprehensive, three-year categorical training designed to prepare residents for a successful career in emergency medicine. The program utilizes a 28-day block schedule, allowing for focused and immersive experiences across various aspects of emergency medicine. Each year, the program recruits seven residents, allowing for personalized training and mentorship under the supervision of experienced, board-certified attending physicians.

Residents train in a cutting-edge facility located in the Centro Medico Episcopal San Lucas in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the premier tertiary care center in the southern region of the island. The Emergency Department consists of three distinct care areas: the Main Emergency Department, a Fast Track unit for less critical cases, and a Pediatric ER, thereby exposing residents to a vast range of medical pathologies and emergency scenarios.

1

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is structured across the three years of residency, with each year comprising focused blocks. In each of the three postgraduate years (PGY-1, PGY-2, and PGY-3), residents partake in four-week blocks dedicated to intensive learning and clinical practice.

2

Clinical Rotations

Rotations are designed to provide residents with hands-on experience in critical areas of emergency medicine. These rotations are both diverse and intense, incorporating elements of trauma management, resuscitation techniques, and exposure to various patient demographics, particularly in the pediatric population.

Opportunities for Medical Students

The program invites fourth-year medical students to participate in clinical clerkships, which provides essential exposure to emergency medicine. The clerkship lasts four weeks and occurs in the same Emergency Department that residents train in, offering students the chance to engage directly in patient care while interacting with clinical faculty and advanced residents. Students participate in didactic sessions, simulation training, and various rotations within the department.

3

Emergency Medicine Clerkships

The standard Emergency Medicine clerkship includes rotations through the Fast Track and Acute Care areas, with opportunities to work in the Pediatric ER. Didactic sessions are held weekly, supplemented by simulation training through “Sim Days,” which fosters a hands-on learning environment for students.

Ultrasound Clerkship

A specialized ultrasound clerkship allows students to perform and assist in ultrasound exams, guided by qualified faculty, and present findings in quality assurance sessions. This experience enhances diagnostic skills crucial for emergency medical practice.

4

Applicants to the Ponce Emergency Medicine Residency Program must meet specific qualifications, including US MD or IMG status. Candidates are required to have completed the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK exams, and they must provide a curriculum vitae along with three letters of recommendation, with two preferably authored by emergency medicine faculty. 5

This focus on inclusivity and support for diversity aids in the recruitment process for highly competitive candidates across various backgrounds.
