2232110C3The Emergency Medicine Residency program at HCA Florida Westside Hospital is a comprehensive three-year training initiative, designed to cultivate a new generation of skilled emergency physicians. The program operates under the accreditation of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and features a robust curriculum that emphasizes both clinical skills and leadership development in a supportive educational environment.
HCA Florida Westside Hospital is a 250-bed full-service acute care hospital that has been certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration (ACHA). The hospital provides care to over 60,000 patients each year, presenting residents with diverse clinical experiences. In addition to clinical training at Westside, residents will rotate through the Emergency Department at HCA Florida Northwest Hospital, a 289-bed medical center with similar patient volumes and various specialized services.
Program Structure
The residency structure involves four months of critical care training, exposure to anesthesia, and significant pediatric emergency medicine experience, amounting to five months of hands-on pediatric training. The curriculum is meticulously crafted, incorporating not only direct clinical experience but also formal lectures, simulations, and interprofessional learning opportunities. The program comprises 38 four-week rotation blocks alongside a dedicated four-week orientation block for new interns.
Each year, the program accommodates thirteen new residents, fostering an environment that facilitates adequate attention and resources for each trainee. In total, there are 39 residents across the program.
Curriculum Details
The detailed curriculum for residents is as follows:
- PGY 1: 5 blocks of Emergency Medicine, along with rotations in anesthesia, cardiology, emergency medical services, medical intensive care, orthopedics, pediatric emergency medicine, trauma, and ultrasound.
- PGY 2: 10 blocks of Emergency Medicine, with additional rotations in obstetrics and gynecology, the surgical intensive care unit, and elective opportunities.
- PGY 3: 9 blocks of Emergency Medicine, with an inclusion of rotations in medical and pediatric intensive care units, and further elective options.
Training Opportunities
The program emphasizes various specialized tracks, including emergency medical services (EMS), international medicine, administration, simulation, ultrasound, research, and wilderness medicine. Such diversity in training ensures residents graduate with adaptable skills suited for various emergency medical environments.
Faculty and Resources
The faculty comprises board-certified emergency medicine specialists who are dedicated to providing residents with an educational experience that emphasizes both clinical skills and personal development. With significant resources allocated for both resident training and medical education, faculty members actively engage in mentoring and facilitating academic growth.
Compensation and Benefits
Residency benefits include health and disability insurance available from the first day of employment, four weeks of paid time off (PTO), an educational allowance according to GME policy, and support for relevant certifications such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, and ATLS. Meals are provided during clinical shifts, and residents receive lab jackets and other necessary items specific to the program.
Application and Admission Process
The HCA Florida Westside Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency program is open to international applicants, provided they have undergone training equivalent to a United States medical school education and meet visa requirements. Previous clinical experience in the U.S., ideally accompanied by a recommendation letter, enhances the competitiveness of applications. The program accepts DO applicants and considers holistic aspects of each application, including letters of recommendation, particularly from emergency medicine faculty.
While there are no explicit cutoff scores for board examinations, applications are reviewed comprehensively, emphasizing the entirety of each applicant's credentials. U.S. clinical experience is beneficial, but a rotation at the institution is not necessary for an interview invitation. The application deadline is November 1, with rolling interviews conducted thereafter.
Visa Support
The program offers sponsorship for visas, accommodating international medical graduates through various visa types, ensuring qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds can participate in the residency.
