Cleveland Clinic Foundation/Florida Weston Program

The Anesthesiology Residency Program at Cleveland Clinic Florida is a four-year accredited program, consisting of a Clinical Base Year (CBY) followed by three Clinical Anesthesia years (CA-1, CA-2, CA-3). The primary location for the program is at the Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital, which has recently undergone significant expansion, enhancing its capacity and facilities to better serve its diverse patient population.

The residency program was launched in 2017 with an aim to provide comprehensive training in anesthesiology. Currently, the program accommodates a total of twenty residents, five in each class, promoting a tight-knit learning environment where residents can closely interact with faculty members. The program emphasizes both clinical excellence and a supportive training atmosphere that fosters education through mentorship and collaborative work.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is meticulously designed to ensure thorough exposure to all aspects of anesthesiology, enabling residents to build essential skills and competence. Outstanding opportunities arise from the high volume of surgeries performed annually, including over 21,000 anesthetics, which cover a wide range of surgical specialties.

Clinical Rotations

As part of the clinical rotations, residents gain significant experience in various subspecialties, including general surgery, minimally invasive surgical procedures, orthopedic surgery, cardiac and thoracic procedures, and more. In fact, the exposure includes significant time spent in critical care settings, supplemented by an experience-based environment that includes emergency medicine and pain management.

Educational Opportunities

Formal didactic sessions are an integral part of the educational opportunity, where residents are relieved from clinical duties to participate in long-format lectures, journal clubs, and case discussions. During the CA-3 year, residents also work more independently, providing anesthesia for complex cases while honing leadership and teaching skills.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The competitive nature of the program commonly attracts candidates with strong academic records. While it is considered highly competitive, the program is also recognized as being friendly towards DO graduates and International Medical Graduates (IMGs). Specific eligibility requirements include strong academic backgrounds, USMLE transcripts, and letters of recommendation. Candidates who have graduated from medical school within the last five years are preferred, and those presenting failed STEP exams must provide a reasonable explanation to be considered.
