Loma Linda University Health Education Consortium Program

The Integrated (I-6) Thoracic Surgery training program at Loma Linda University Health Education Consortium (LLUHEC) is a comprehensive 6-year residency program that provides residents with broad-based and balanced training. The program is fully accredited by ACGME and offers a range of experiences in cardiac and thoracic surgery operations. Residents have the opportunity to interact with a diverse patient population with a high incidence of heart disease.

The program provides a structured curriculum aimed at preparing residents for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery Certification. Residents train at three major clinical sites, including Loma Linda University Medical Center, Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, and Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans' Hospital. Rotations are designed to provide exposure to a wide variety of patients in different clinical settings.

Residents at Loma Linda University Health Education Consortium engage in a rich, hands-on operative experience that enables them to fulfill minimum case log requirements easily. They perform cardiac surgical procedures, including coronary artery bypass, valve repair, heart transplantation, and other complex procedures for adult and pediatric heart conditions. Trainees also gain well-rounded operative experience in thoracic surgery.

The program includes dedicated educational time with weekly didactic sessions, STS Learn CT Surgery curriculum, faculty lectures, journal clubs, and conferences. Clinical rotations emphasize autonomy and clinical decision-making, allowing residents to develop independence in clinical judgment and procedural skills.

Dr. Chung, the Chair, and Program Director, leads the program with a strong background in cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Rabkin serves as the Associate Program Director and brings a wealth of experience from various institutions.
