Medical University of South Carolina Program

The Medical University of South Carolina Radiation Oncology residency program at the Hollings Cancer Center offers a comprehensive training experience to develop future radiation oncologists. The program is committed to delivering excellent, evidence-based, and compassionate care through a combination of didactic teaching, clinical research, and quality improvement initiatives.

Residents have the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population and receive broad training in various areas of radiation oncology, such as brachytherapy, radiosurgery, image-guided radiotherapy, and total body irradiation. The program also emphasizes a structured didactic curriculum covering physics, radiobiology, and clinical didactics across all disease sites each year.

Additionally, residents are granted 9 months of elective time during their residency to pursue research or other clinical interests. Financial support is provided for residents to present their research at national meetings, fostering a culture of continuous learning and academic growth.

The Department of Radiation Oncology at MUSC participates in the ERAS match program. Successful applicants will need to complete a clinical internship/preliminary year after medical school at an ACGME-approved program in Transitional Medicine, Internal Medicine, or General Surgery. Residents are supported with book funds, travel support for meetings, as well as dedicated educational resources, including desktop computers and iPads.

The program boasts high-tech facilities, including two locations in the Charleston area with state-of-the-art equipment for radiation therapy. Collaboration with faculty from various specialties at disease-specific clinics and tumor boards provides residents with a comprehensive approach to patient management. Residents also gain exposure to advanced treatment techniques such as stereotactic radiosurgery, brachytherapy, and MR-guided brachytherapy.
