The Southern Illinois University (Alton) Family Medicine Residency Program is a partnership between SIU School of Medicine Department of Family and Community Medicine, Alton Memorial Hospital, and Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation. The program provides broad spectrum Family Medicine training while serving the communities of the greater Metro-East St. Louis region in south-central Illinois. Residents benefit from experiences in St. Louis and rural Illinois communities. The program focuses on high-quality resident education, patient care, personal wellness, and continuity of care.

Application criteria include participating in ERAS, passing USMLE Step I (or COMLEX for osteopathic applicants), and submitting applications by December 1. There is no specific cutoff score for exams, but the number of attempts is considered. Graduates who have been out of school for more than three years must have one year of clinical experience in the US within the last five years. The program sponsors only J-1 visas and accepts six residents in each class.

The curriculum offers various rotations, longitudinal experiences, and electives to provide a well-rounded training experience. Didactic sessions are structured weekly and cover a range of topics. The program also offers opportunities for medical students from select medical schools to participate in clerkships, sub-internships, and electives.

The faculty includes Program Director Dr. Rebecca Hoffman, Assistant Program Directors Dr. Safiya McNeese-Ruffin and Dr. Deborah Bross, who are committed to resident education and well-being. Residents can expect to receive guidance from dedicated faculty members throughout their training.
