UAMS Regional Centers Program

The UAMS Regional Centers Program in Family Medicine at Crossett is dedicated to training physicians who are well-equipped to address the unique health care needs of rural communities. The program aims to provide an in-depth experience in a rural setting through a structured curriculum that emphasizes not only clinical skills but also community engagement and public health awareness.

Program Overview

The program is designed to allow residents to spend more than 50% of their time in clinical rotations at rural sites, following a 1-2 structure. In the first year of residency (PGY-1), residents are based at UAMS in Little Rock, going through various clinical rotations, including two months at Arkansas Children’s Hospital for pediatric training. The following two years (PGY-2 and PGY-3) are spent primarily in southeastern Arkansas, specifically at Ashley County Medical Center and the Family Clinic of Ashley County. This format provides residents with crucial urban experience initially before transitioning to hands-on rural patient care.

Curriculum and Rotations

The residency program offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes diverse clinical rotations and longitudinal experiences. In PGY-1, residents participate in continuity clinics in Little Rock, while in PGY-2 and PGY-3, they engage more actively in continuity clinics in Crossett, dedicating an increasing number of half-days each week to direct patient care. The curriculum includes a range of elective rotations, such as:

• Wound Care
• Emergency Medicine
• OB/GYN
• Dermatology
• Palliative Care
• Sports Medicine

Additionally, residents can participate in elective experiences guided by their interests and individual learning plans. This curriculum fosters a comprehensive understanding of family medicine with a strong focus on chronic disease management and preventative care.

Facilities and Training Sites

The primary clinical training site, Ashley County Medical Center, is a well-established critical access hospital providing a broad spectrum of specialty services alongside core family medicine services. The facility is equipped with advanced medical technologies, including a state-of-the-art radiology suite. UAMS Health, the statewide health system encompassing the residency program, provides residents access to a myriad of resources, including a network of hospitals and specialized institutes.

Application Requirements

To apply for the UAMS Regional Centers Program, candidates must present a series of application materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Key requirements include:

• Graduation from an accredited medical school.
• Successful completion of USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 within three attempts.
• Submission by the application deadline, which is set for December 31, 2024.
• All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English and possess a valid driver’s license.
• International Medical Graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate and preferably one year of clinical experience in a U.S. healthcare facility.

It is important to note that the program does not sponsor H-1B or J-1 visas, which may limit opportunities for certain international medical graduates.
