University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Program

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Dermatology Residency Program is a three-year ACGME-accredited program that emphasizes high-quality health care, creative teaching, and systematic research for patients with skin disease. The program prides itself on its state-of-the-art facilities, including a clinic with numerous specialized rooms for various dermatologic treatments and research laboratories. Each year, the program accepts five new residents, with a total of 15 positions available within the program.

Key Highlights of the Program:

• Comprehensive Training: Residents receive extensive training in adult and pediatric dermatology, as well as dermatologic surgery. The program places a strong emphasis on correlating cutaneous pathophysiology and histologic findings with clinical disease and therapy responses.
• Research Opportunities: Research is encouraged, and time is allocated for residents to conduct studies. The department has modern research facilities spanning approximately 4,000 square feet and conducts world-class research in basic and clinical skin disease.
• Board Certification: The program prepares residents to be eligible to sit for the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) examination upon completion of their residency.
• Clinical Exposure: Residents are responsible for a significant portion of patient care, supervising approximately 30,000 patient visits annually to the department. This exposure ensures experience with a wide spectrum of diseases.
• Faculty Support: The faculty consists of recognized leaders in dermatology, providing residents with mentorship and guidance throughout the training program.
• Application Requirements: Interested applicants must have completed a preliminary year of postgraduate medical training (PGY-1) in an ACGME or RCPSC accredited broad-based program in the United States or Canada. Required materials for application include a personal statement, USMLE scores, ECFMG certificate (if applicable), Dean's letter, transcript, up to 4 letters of recommendation, a wallet-sized photograph, and a supplemental ERAS application. The selection process includes interviews conducted via Zoom.
