The West Virginia University Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program offers a comprehensive training experience at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. The program has a status of Continued Accreditation from the ACGME Review Committee.

The residency program consists of 20 categorical positions following the traditional orthopaedic training curriculum and 1 research position. A unique feature of the program is the early operative experience and close-knit family atmosphere, aimed at developing both excellent surgeons and individuals.

Application requirements include the submission of a completed application form, USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 Score Report, certified copy of medical school transcript, Dean's Letter, and three letters of recommendation. The program participates in the National Residency Matching Program and applications must be submitted by the deadline of October 1st.

Candidates selected for interviews are assessed based on medical school transcripts, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, and personal criteria of faculty members. Final selection is based on evaluations from the interview and applicant's fourth-year medical school rotations.

The program supports J-1 visas only and typically conducts in-person interviews in January. The residents benefit from various amenities such as free parking, cafeteria card, iPad mini, and loupes. Residents are provided funding for conferences and encouraged to engage in teaching and research activities.

The rotation schedule includes exposure to various subspecialties such as adult reconstruction, hand, spine, sports, trauma, and more. Residents are required to produce at least one research manuscript before graduation and participate in educational conferences, teaching activities, and clinical duties.

While doing a subinternship is not mandatory, it allows both students and faculty to assess compatibility. Subinternships can provide early hands-on training and a glimpse into life in Morgantown, known for its outdoor activities. Up to 3 subinterns per month are accepted from July to December.
