Overview of the Program

The Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at Henry Ford Health is a fully accredited four-year training program designed to equip residents with comprehensive skills in women’s health. With a faculty of over 35 board-certified specialists, the program accepts five residents per year, fostering a collaborative educational environment.1

Upon completion, graduates qualify to practice as specialists in obstetrics and gynecology and are eligible to take the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology examination.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum is structured into clinical rotations that span four years, progressively increasing in complexity and responsibility.

PGY-1 Rotations

Residents participate in one rotation focusing on orientation, three rotations in obstetrics and gynecology, and additional rotations in gynecologic oncology, surgical intensive care, consultative medicine, and reproductive endocrinology.

PGY-2 to PGY-4 Rotations

Subsequent years feature more rotations focusing on maternal-fetal medicine, female pelvic medicine, family planning, and elective opportunities. Residents refine their surgical skills and take on leadership roles during the PGY-4 year.

Additionally, the program emphasizes continuity clinics where residents manage patient care over time, enhancing their abilities to provide consistent, holistic care.6

Clinical Experience

The residency offers diverse clinical experiences across various sites, including a fully-equipped obstetrics department with a high-volume labor and delivery service, included high-risk obstetrics and intricate gynecological procedures.1

Research Opportunities

The program is strongly committed to research, expecting all residents to complete at least one project that culminates in a manuscript and oral presentation.10

Support is provided through mentorship, protected time during selected rotations, and access to resources that enhance the research experience.

  • Three letters of recommendation, including two in obstetrics and gynecology
  • International medical graduates must hold ECFMG certification

Visa Support

The program sponsors J-1 visas only for international medical graduates, emphasizing the need for applicants to secure this visa type upon entering the program.14
