Henry Ford Genesys Family Medicine Residency Program Overview

The Henry Ford Genesys Family Medicine Residency Program is a comprehensive training program located in Grand Blanc, Michigan. This program offers three years of intensive education with positions available for 39 residents, making it one of the largest family medicine residency programs in Michigan.

The program is well-known for its academic rigor and is affiliated with Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine. As such, residents benefit from a rich educational experience that encompasses both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide residents with balanced training in various medical fields. The program consists of a structured rotation schedule, including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, and specialized rotations in pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics, and more. Each resident will complete numerous rotations that emphasize common medical procedures, supervision, and patient care.

For the PGY-1 year, residents engage in rotations such as Inpatient Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics, and Pediatrics at Hurley Medical Center, among others. The succeeding years (PGY-2 and PGY-3) offer further advanced surgical, pediatric, and elective opportunities, allowing residents to tailor their training to their career goals.

Didactic Education

The program places significant emphasis on didactic training. Morning reports are conducted multiple times a week, where residents present cases and learn from faculty and specialists in various fields. Protected didactic sessions every Wednesday allow residents to focus on formal education away from clinical duties. Residents also participate in workshops designed to enhance their clinical skills and knowledge base, including hands-on procedural training.

Training Sites

Training primarily occurs at the Henry Ford Genesys Hospital and the Henry Ford Genesys Family Health Center, which provides a comprehensive atmosphere for residents to engage in primary care across various demographics. The Family Health Center is fully equipped for primary care services, including women’s health and chronic care management.

Research and Electives

The program encourages residents to engage in research activities and offers structured elective rotations starting in the second year. Residents may select electives based on their professional interests, which can include areas such as dermatology, nephrology, pediatrics, and pain management.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The application process for the Henry Ford Genesys Family Medicine Residency is competitive. Candidates are expected to have passed Step 1 and Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) on their first attempt, although exceptions may be made for unique circumstances. The program does not accept ECFMG certification requirements for interviews, which can make it somewhat IMG-friendly.

Visa sponsorship is available, specifically for J-1 Visas, making the program accessible to international medical graduates willing to comply with the educational and training requirements.
