Henry Ford Health/Henry Ford Jackson Hospital Program

The Henry Ford Health Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital is transitioning to a three-year format in July 2024, accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education. This program includes 30 residents, comprising 10 residents per year, and is supported by 12 core faculty members. It is located in Jackson, Michigan, a community that offers extensive clinical exposure.

Henry Ford Jackson Hospital operates as a Level II trauma center, equipped with 420 inpatient beds and receiving around 20,000 inpatients annually. The emergency department features 60 private treatment rooms and caters to approximately 80,000 visits per year. An Independent Emergency Physicians group staffs the emergency room, which enhances the training environment by providing exposure to a variety of case types and emergency situations.

The curriculum encompasses four optional tracks: ultrasound, sports medicine, emergency medical services, and wilderness medicine, allowing residents to specialize and pursue their interests without the obligation to select a track. Furthermore, the hospital’s location provides a large catchment area, thus facilitating a diverse patient population.

The training at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital is designed to develop well-rounded emergency physicians. Residents learn to function effectively with minimal resources as well as under more advanced capabilities present at larger facilities. The program includes a significant emphasis on administrative and business aspects of emergency medicine, alongside clinical practices.

Didactic Education and Training

The residency incorporates a structured didactic program that features weekly protected education time. Every Wednesday morning, conferences occur, which include oral board case studies, EKG and radiology reviews, presentations, and lectures from both core faculty and guest speakers. Residents are assigned to small groups during the oral boards, enhancing their ability to develop clinical reasoning skills.

The program also benefits from the Statewide Campus System, collaborating with 26 hospitals in Michigan to enrich the educational experience with various topics and hands-on skill labs. Furthermore, residents are required to engage in at least one Quality Improvement (QI) or Scientific Research Project as part of their scholarly activity involvement.

Clinical Rotations

The curriculum is structured across three years, with each year comprised of various rotations:

• PGY-1: 9 blocks of Emergency Medicine, 1 block each in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine Ultrasound/EMS, Labor & Delivery, and Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
• PGY-2: 9 blocks of Emergency Medicine, along with 1 block each in Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Pediatric Emergency Medicine (out rotation), and Trauma (out rotation).
• PGY-3: 9 blocks of Emergency Medicine, 1 block each in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound, Medical ICU, Pediatric ICU, and an elective.

This structured approach allows residents to gain diverse clinical experience while building their competencies.

Application Requirements

Individuals interested in applying to the Emergency Medicine Residency should have registered with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The selection criteria include having completed the ACLS certification (offered free of charge to incoming residents), medical licensure requirements, and submission of a minimum of three letters of recommendation, with two being from board-certified emergency physicians. Graduates of international medical schools must also provide proof of educational credentials and visa status.
